About Sault Ste. Marie - Provided by Found
Locally
Sault Ste Marie was founded because of its strategic location smack
in the middle of the Great Lakes. Some original land titles for the
area still reside in Quebec City and were signed by Samuel de
Champlain himself. The canal and locks were built to get larger ships
passed the rapids, and were built on each side of the US-Canada
border. The Canadian locks are now a national historic site, and the
American locks still operate as part of the St Lawrence Seaway.
There is lots to see and do around Sault Ste. Marie in the city.
The city has a fascinating
history. There are DOZENS of museums
and historical sites, lots of parks
and greenspace along the city's rivers and canals, and activities
and sports
and festivals
to keep anybody busy (and happy). Not to mention the lakes and the St
Mary's River and the recreational paths than run alongside. We even
have a page that has tips on hundreds
of things to do with kids.
The "Soo" lies on the international boundary, and locals
know that half the action is on the OTHER side of the border. Whether
it's the shopping that's cheaper the bars and restaurants more
interesting, or just because there's something to do there, border
crossing comes as second nature to most. More...
There's even a bus that can take you across, handy for late-night
bar-hopping! More....
Customs & border crossing rules are pretty straight forward for
most Canadians, though those that are citizens of other countries (or
in some cases were born outside of Canada or the US) may require a
visa before crossing. More...
It's easy to get around in Sault Ste. Marie once you know where you're going, how it all
started and who's here.
